Madam

        I wish I could give you any
Comfortable or Encouraging news respecting my
worthy friend Capt Flinders, Government can do nothing
in his favor under the Capricious & insolent Government
of the Tyrant of France, I have left no means untried,
but whether or not I have done good or may have done
harm I have no means of Learning, I sent word
above a year ago by a way very likely to Reach the Ears of
Bonaparte, that nothing but the Liberation of Capt
Flinders would ever induce me to beleive [sic] that the
Letters I receivd [sic] from Paris were not a deceipt [sic] as I
thought it impoƒsible that Gen de Caen would venture
to disobey the orders of such a sovereign as Bonaparte
unleƒs he had secret instructions from France.

        There is however a hope from another

Point the Node of India has been of Late so Severely
impaired by veƒsels from the Isle of France that I am
told vigorous measures are to be adopted for Seizing
the Island, if this succeeds & if it is Blesd [sic] with
wisdom & executed with Spirit it must succeed, we
may have the happineƒs of seeing the gallant
Capt Flinders before we expect him
